Why do you crave salty food?

Why do you crave salty food?

It's 4pm and all you want is chips. Or olives. Or a handful of anything salty.

It's easy to put this down to willpower. But your body has a genuine appetite for salt, and sometimes it's telling you something. Other times it isn't.

Your brain has a built-in salt appetite

Sodium is essential, so your body tracks it closely. When levels drop, hormones that regulate fluid and sodium balance can drive up your appetite for salty food. It's a survival feature, and it can rise after heavy sweating, a stomach bug, or when you cut carbs sharply.

But most cravings aren't a deficiency

Here's the twist. Surveys suggest most New Zealand adults already eat more sodium than guidelines recommend, mostly from processed foods. Chips and takeaways are also engineered to taste good, and salty flavours are rewarding on their own. A craving after a stressful day, a bad night's sleep or a long stretch of boredom is often about habit and mood rather than sodium.

Salt makes you thirsty, too

Salty snacks push you to drink more, which is why bars serve them. So a salty craving followed by a drink can be a loop rather than a need.

A FEW THINGS WORTH TRYING

Ask what's happened first. Have you been sweating a lot, fasting, unwell or eating low carb? If yes, the craving may be real. If it's a stressed Tuesday at your desk, probably not.

Have a glass of water and wait ten minutes. Thirst and hunger get mixed up more often than you'd think.

Reach for salty whole foods. Olives, pickles, cottage cheese or a cup of broth hit the spot with more going on nutritionally than chips.

Replace what you lost after a big sweat. If you've been training hard or out in the heat, an electrolyte drink with a meal covers both the craving and the loss.

Check your sleep. A poor night tends to increase appetite for salty, fatty foods.

If you have high blood pressure, kidney or heart conditions, or take medication that affects fluid balance, check with your doctor before adding extra salt. And if you have an intense, constant salt craving along with dizziness, tiredness or weight loss, see your GP.

Salt cravings are worth listening to. Just ask a question or two before you answer them.
